San Juan: Argentina's Andes beyond the tourist trail

While Mendoza draws wine tourism and Bariloche handles the mass mountain market, San Juan offers something neither can: authentic Andean cordillera with no crowds, Andean wildlife, extraordinary geology, and skies ranked among the clearest on Earth.

Arroyo Turquesa is one of the most striking high-altitude treks in Argentina — reaching over 4,000 meters with direct views of the Caballito Glacier — and very few travelers know it exists. The Pampa del Leoncito has some of the lowest light pollution levels in the country, making it one of South America's premier astrotourism destinations. And the Cerro de los Siete Colores is geological storytelling at its finest, guided by a specialist geologist who reads millions of years of Earth history into every layer of rock.

Centinela Explora has been running this circuit for four seasons. It has sold out every time.

Frequently asked questions

No technical mountaineering experience is required, but good general fitness and comfort with multi-hour hikes are essential. The Arroyo Turquesa trek covers 16 km round trip above 4,000 meters, with altitude exposure. No climbing gear or technical skills needed — but being accustomed to walking several hours on uneven terrain is important.

The hike covers approximately 16 km round trip and reaches over 4,000 meters above sea level in the Andean cordillera of San Juan. The trail is well-marked but involves altitude exposure and wind. The destination is the Turquesa stream, with its intensely mineral-colored water and direct views of the Caballito Glacier. It's the most demanding and most spectacular day of the trip.

The activity takes place at CASLEO (Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito), one of Argentina's principal astronomical observatories, located inside El Leoncito National Park. The area has among the lowest light pollution levels in South America, with over 300 clear nights per year — making it a world-class astrotourism destination.

Land sailing (carrovelismo in Spanish) involves riding wind-powered three-wheeled vehicles across the flat, dry surface of the Pampa del Leoncito — an arid plain in the Calingasta Valley. No prior experience is required and it's suitable for anyone in reasonable physical condition.

The camping is in the mountains in expedition tents — organized and well-equipped, but not glamping. A sleeping bag is required and not included in the price (you'll need to bring your own). All meals are included and well-prepared. For travelers who haven't camped much, this is often one of the most memorable parts of the trip — sleeping under an open Andean sky at altitude is an experience that's hard to replicate elsewhere.

Spring (October–November) and autumn (March–April) offer the best conditions: comfortable valley temperatures, access to high-altitude circuits and clear skies. Winter can be very cold at elevation and summer too hot in the lower valleys. November in particular combines good mountain access with long days and clear nights ideal for stargazing.

The Andean cordillera of San Juan is home to Andean condors, guanacos, grey foxes, viscachas and a variety of high-altitude raptors and bird species. El Leoncito National Park also supports guanacos and diverse arid-scrub birdlife. For wildlife photographers and birdwatchers, San Juan offers opportunities that mainstream mountain tourism rarely includes.
