Where is Ischigualasto Park?

Located in northwestern Argentina, in the province of San Juan, the park spans the Valle Fértil and Jáchal departments, bordering La Rioja to the north. With altitudes ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 meters, Ischigualasto offers a truly unique landscape.

Diverse Environments

Climate

With a warm and arid climate, the park experiences wide daily temperature variations and intense solar radiation. Summer temperatures can exceed 40°C, while winter lows drop below -7°C. Although visitable year-round, summer rains may limit activities.

This arid landscape features carob trees, cacti, and retamos, creating a striking contrast with the desert environment.

Fauna

Wildlife includes guanacos, viscachas, foxes, and birds such as condors and rheas, enriching the park’s biodiversity.

History

Recognized for its paleontological value, Ischigualasto was declared a Protected Area in 1971 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The park preserves significant fossils that reveal life from millions of years ago. The William Sill Interpretation Center is a must-visit for those interested in learning about the park’s paleontological discoveries.
