Catamarca: Volcanoes, Salt Flats and Extreme Landscapes in Northwestern Argentina

Catamarca

Volcanoes, salt flats, dunes and otherworldly landscapes in northwestern Argentina

Catamarca is one of Argentina’s most surprising and least explored destinations. A province where the landscape changes dramatically within just a few kilometers: from some of the highest sand dunes in the country, to natural hot springs in the mountains, and from roads surrounded by volcanoes over 6,000 meters high to vast salt flats and unique volcanic stone fields.

It is a land defined by extreme geography, Andean history, and the constant feeling of traveling through places that seem from another planet.

Traveling through Catamarca means crossing the Andes, the puna plateau, and the desert in a single journey.

Fiambalá and the Tatón Dunes

In the western part of the province lies Fiambalá, the gateway to some of Catamarca’s most sought-after landscapes.

Here you’ll find the Tatón and Medanitos Dunes, home to the famous Federico Kirbus Dune, considered one of the highest in the world.

Nearby, the Fiambalá Hot Springs and the historic Adobe Route complete the cultural and natural experience of western Catamarca.
