Uruguay River Islands: Paddle, Discover and Enjoy

Some trips are filled with adventure. Others also come with flavor, laughter and constant surprise. Our kayaking expedition through the islands of the Uruguay River was all of that.

We started with no previous kayaking experience: learning how to paddle, turn and stop... and even getting a bit wet along the way. What amazed us most was how quickly we went from beginners to confident paddlers. By Monday, we were navigating channels and islands like true kayak explorers.

Wildlife accompanied us throughout the journey: the bright blue flash of kingfishers flying across the river guided our way, and more than once a curious river otter popped its head out of the water to observe us in silence. The feeling of entering a living, untouched world was constant.

The setting was perfect: we paddled for hours almost alone, crossing paths with only a few occasional boats. The silence of the river, broken only by bird calls and the sound of water, became one of the greatest luxuries of the trip.

On land, exploration continued: walks across the islands, birdwatching, discovering mushrooms and wild flowers, and time to enjoy hidden beaches. Some explored. Others relaxed. And some simply sat by the river, watching time go by.

But one thing deserves a chapter of its own: the food.

Our guide Dante was not only an expert kayaker, he was also the chef of the expedition. Every meal felt like a reward after paddling: hot, abundant and delicious dishes. And yes… we even enjoyed pancakes with dulce de leche in the middle of the river islands.

The shelters completed the experience: new, comfortable and perfectly designed for resting after each day. Falling asleep to river sounds and waking up to birdsong became part of daily life.

"The Uruguay River Islands trip is 100% recommended. The organization and guides were flawless. The shelters are new and comfortable, the food is gourmet. We paddled almost alone, walked the islands, watched birds, mushrooms and flowers, and had time to enjoy the river beaches. A wonderful group and an experience to repeat."

Traveler Review

As always, the group played a key role. Laughter, conversations and shared moments turned strangers into travel companions.

At Centinela Explora, we design each experience with balance, intention and deep enjoyment in mind. Because traveling is not just about moving. It’s about living fully.

On the Uruguay River, we didn’t just learn how to paddle. We learned how to slow down, how to observe differently… and how to truly enjoy.
