San Juan Traverse: Sky, Mountains & Emotion in Pure Form
Journey through the San Juan mountain range: Barreal, the Seven-Color Hill, trekking to the Turquoise Stream, stargazing at CASLEO Observatory, and land sailing at Pampa del Leoncito. A deep experience of connection with nature and the sky.
Barreal, Seven-Color Hill and a Geological Welcome
Everything began in the city of San Juan, where we met to start a unique experience. After lunch downtown, we headed toward Barreal, in the heart of the Andean foothills. That same afternoon, we visited the Seven-Color Hill accompanied by Sofía, a geologist guide who helped us read the traces of time engraved in the rocks. From the very first day, the group—though small—showed incredible energy and an eagerness to connect with nature.
High-Altitude Trek, Refuge, and Breathtaking Landscapes
The following day, a 4x4 adventure took us deep into the mountains, to Laguna Blanca, where a simple but cozy refuge awaited. We hiked, rested, and prepared for the great challenge ahead: the trek to the Turquoise Stream.
On the third day, the trek literally took our breath away—and not just because of the altitude. After several hours of hiking, we reached the spot where the stream, of a deep turquoise hue, flows down from the Caballito Glacier. The scenery was so impressive, so vast and silent, that several of us couldn’t hold back tears. Emotion, hugs, and a deep respectful silence filled that magical moment where physical effort, connection with nature, and the feeling of living something unrepeatable all came together.
Astrotourism, Land Sailing & Memorable Skies
On the fourth day, back in Barreal, some adventurers tried an optional activity: land sailing at the Pampa del Leoncito, adding adrenaline and laughter to the journey. That night came the perfect finale: a visit to the CASLEO Astronomical Observatory under a new moon. Gazing at the deep San Juan sky through high-powered telescopes was, without a doubt, the perfect closing for this journey. Silence, stars, and the feeling of witnessing what few ever see.
An Experience That Leaves a Mark
This trip was much more than a trekking tour. It was an experience of deep connection—with the earth, the sky, oneself, and others. And like all truly special moments, it left us wanting more.
“When we reached the Turquoise Stream, the fatigue vanished. Only emotion remained. Some cried, others laughed—but we all knew we were living something truly extraordinary.” — Participant of the San Juan Traverse.
