Birds, Mud, and Adventure: Our First Big Day
A firsthand account of an unforgettable birdwatching day in Ceibas (Entre Ríos, Argentina), during the October Big Day 2024 organized by eBird. Rain, mud, laughter, and dozens of species recorded.
A unique day in Ceibas
On October 12, 2024, Centinela Explora joined the October Big Day for the first time, the global birdwatching event organized by eBird. Though it was just a one-day trip, it left us with memories we’ll cherish for a long time.

Unexpected rain as our companion
The day started with a persistent rain that wasn’t in the forecast. We hesitated, but most of the group decided to take a chance. With that adventurous spirit, we headed to Ceibas. Thankfully, around 9 a.m., the sky began to clear and birds started singing. Nature was waiting for us.

Getting muddy is part of the plan
We crossed rural roads through woodland, wetlands, and grasslands. At one point, the van skidded and got stuck, and we all ended up pushing—covered in mud and laughing out loud. What could have been a problem turned into a group-defining story.
Bird sightings and shared records
The rest of the day offered plenty of unforgettable sightings. We walked attentively, listened to every bird call, scanned wetlands and trees, and added dozens of species to our count. Before heading back to Buenos Aires, we made one last stop along the Malvinas Islands trail to record species in a different habitat.
A testimony that says it all
“Despite the rain—or maybe thanks to it—we had a beautiful day watching birds. Sharing it with the group made it unforgettable.”

A first time that won’t be the last
Our first Big Day was, without a doubt, a success. Not just in numbers, but in energy, attitude, and connection with nature. While the weather wasn’t perfect, the spirit of the group certainly was.
